I realized rather quickly that a ship magazine was something more than just a room that held powder kegs ![]() Thanks Arthur for the complement on the photographs. I'm pretty satisfied with the lighting of the shots of the overall model, but I'm still working on getting better quality closeups. Jeff

Mainly because you get to see what's there and its not all covered up. A lot of thought, research and planning has gone into this build.

Mario – For a great source of general information I read Gene's article about the magazine in the MSB Journal. To get into a detailed explanation of the construction of the magazine components I used the following books for my reference: The Arming and Fitting of English Ships of War 1600-1815 by Brian Lavery The Construction and Fitting of the Sailing Man-of-War, 1650-1850 by Peter Goodwin The Fully Framed Model, HMN SWAN CLASS SLOOPS 1767-1780 Volume I by David Antscherl The first two books cover in great detail all of the how and whys of a working warship. Mr. Antscherl's book puts all of this into perspective for a model builder. Although they are rather pricey, I'd recommend any of them for someone serious about creating a model with a lot of detailed construction. Jeff [ Edited Tue May 21 2013, 12:20pm ]

For my model this will be of a rather simple design and only enough to act as the final display cradle, while still showing the basic construction of various components. I'll start by adding the deck clamps and beams to the magazine, followed by framing the hatchway accessing the lower deck above. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Next the hatch coaming, along with the ladder. ![]() ![]() ![]() During this period of the build I made a revision to the model's design. You may notice in this series of pictures that I clipped the “wings” off of the rear light room wall. My original plans were to add two access panels into an area for storage – something like a bread room, etc. Rather than have the appearance of another bulkhead I chose to enclose the light room portion only. For the framing I'll start by building the keel. Two blind holes are drilled into the bottom side for pinning the model onto the final display stand later. There are three frames, one at the forward bulkhead, the second at the rear light room wall, and the third at the battened wall between the filling and powder rooms. After attaching the framing to the keel the keelson was added. To keep everything nice and secure I placed the framing on a temporary stand. The final step was to add the magazine to the framing cradle. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() In the final post I'll wrap things up by adding a few detailed parts into various areas of the magazine, then place the finished model onto its display stand.

You've got my enthusiasm going for another another area of a ship to model by itself -- a working capstan similar to the one that appears in the Volume 5 of the MSB Journal, one that was built at Texas A & M.
