This is a plank on solid hull model of George Steers' predecessor to the yacht America. The schooner was built for speed and was very successful in the highly competitive piloting trade. Her skipper, Richard Brown, was the same man who sailed the yacht America in her famous victory against the British yachts the following year, bringing home what was later to become the America's Cup. The model is built of Basswood lifts, planked above the waterline and copper sheathed below. Her decks are Lemonwood, her deck furniture and spars are Cherry. This model incorporates the use of metal parts that I cast from Britannia Pewter. This is also the first model I made that used scratch built blocks. While the build log was recently lost, details on the construction should be appearing in an upcoming Ships in Scale article later this year. Clare ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Only, Mary Taylor was built the year before the America. Were I to build another Mary Taylor, I would use a different set of plans and the model would look even more like the America. But, she is about 2/3 the size of America. I've got a yacht America on the ways too. It's more or less on hold at the moment, so I haven't posted anything about it lately. Clare
