First, the plank stain process. I stain each plank with Minwax stain, then let dry overnight. Next day applied Sharpie Black to the edges of the blanks to simulate pitch. This was done to each edge of each plank. After another day for drying I began the lay up using Titebond Translucent glue. ![]() ![]() The following was a curiosity thing about the use of the Sharpie pen. My practice blank for the swivel gun was done using Maple wood. First I dipped the piece in Minwax Ebony stain following their procedure. After approximately 8 hours all I had was what looked like an attempt to stain a hard, pale piece of wood that appeared somewhat antiqued. So, experimented applying the Sharpie to the Maple and then comparing to a couple of exotic pen blanks for color. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

The pen gave me a deep, dark black and once it had dried for a couple of days, I went over the wales with a paper towel to take the shine off. Your swivel cannon looks great.

I'll make sure I have some in the locker. Fun! Thanks for the comment on the swivel gun. That one has not made the cut. ![]() Appreciate you taking a look. [ Edited Tue Mar 05 2013, 02:36pm ]

The finish was done with a Sharpie Pen applied to the walnut blank, brass handle rod, and glass bead that I used for the handle end. After drying two coats of J.W. etc.’s Right-Step water base clear matte varnish was applied giving the varnish time to dry between coats. As you see the photo is up close and personal, warts and all, but it has made it to my short list, at least for now. ![]() This has been a good learning experience in the turning and bringing it to completion. It’s taught me some things to keep in mind in the future, one being to leave the trunnions’ installation until after the swivel gun is ready to receive the proper mount. One could then slip the one piece trunnions through the mount rings and cannon barrel to complete the mounting. Ah…. now there’s the rub as I try to determine what material, soldered brass or…… , that I should fabricate the mount of. I do plan on at least one more attempt of the swivel gun out of Gaboon Ebony that I now have in the locker. Really curious to find out how well the Gaboon Ebony turns compared to the walnut. Any suggestions on improvement of the cannon or ideas on the mount fabrication would be appreciated. P.S. The third floor is now ready to remove from the lay-up board and cut to shape [ Edited Tue Feb 26 2013, 05:42am ]

Anxious to see the walnut swivel cannon if the pictured one didn't make the cut! Happy turning.
