Picked up when I lived on the west coast, but don’t remember where? I really think this was a good project to start with and as you say a number of things should be learned that will help me along the way. Can’t wait to get to the swivel gun. LOL...... The support equipment to help me build it is supposed to arrive by the end of the day. [ Edited Mon Feb 11 2013, 03:01am ]

Thought you all maybe interested in what the support equipment for making the swivel gun barrel looks like. I haven’t worked with a wood lathe since wood shop in the eighth grade so I’ll be starting off at a very basic level. First photo is my set-up with a dust filter system in the background that I have when doing power carving. I thought it should work well with the lathe and it does. I do wear a dust mask even though the filter system does a good job. ![]() ![]() The last photo shows my starting attempt to learn how to do tapered barrels. I used basswood for my practice and I think I learned that basswood does not particularly turn well being a soft wood……. regardless of the operator. :>) The turned practice portion of the block in the photo is approximately 2.25” long. ![]() I do think I’ll order a few Gaboon Ebony pen blanks to have on hand when I feel I maybe able to do an acceptable job on the swivel gun. I’m going to love having this tool available to me for a number of tasks. [ Edited Mon Feb 11 2013, 03:10am ]

Poplar is fairly cheap and turns pretty good. may i make a suggestion. get some poplar and practise by making a couple of pedistals to mount your bateau when completed. Oh yea woodcrafters is where i purchased my wood turning tools. Hows it going with the Bateau?? have fun

I’m working on a second floor for the bateau now since I want to try to improve my workmanship on the first floor, but stalled with snow removal for a few days and then setting up the lathe when it arrived. I ordered the Taig from Lee Valley.

LOL! The other thing that i was taught in school was to never wear long sleves by these suckers. Just thought i would remind you on that bit of safety....

Maple and walnut are relatively inexpensive and are easy to turn. Boxwood, Ebony and Blood Wood produce very fine turnings but they are expensive. I am sure you will enjoy working with your lathe. Thanks again.

Mike Hi Mike, Thanks for the tips on some hard wood. Got an order off to Bell Forest Products a few minutes ago. Have been wanting to check them out since I ran across them. Been running errands but this afternoon back to the lathe for some more practice and stain some more floor strakes for the bateau's second floor attempt. [ Edited Tue Feb 12 2013, 03:23pm ]

Did you turn the button as a continuous part of the complete bateau gun or did you look for a ready made sphere and glue it to the breech area as the Pomiglion? Thanks for your time. ![]() [ Edited Tue Feb 12 2013, 06:51pm ]

Too me it would be easier because then the button would match the scale accordingly. rather then hunting one down to match the scale... I did not have pomiglion on my gun. I basicly copied the one Jeff had on his plans....
