Also Joe's book is good also. Lots of ideas in it also. A lot of the parts that they sell can also be made. Look at making the parts as learning time and saving money as needed. The sherline mill is next. And the lathe and mill share a lot of the parts also. Later 42rocker

Also, I loved the jig for doing ladders...simple, flawless, infallible. And the ladders come out looking great. I've only got one ladder to deal with on my current project, but it's in a pretty prominent position...it needs to come out looking like one of yours. I'll try your jig. Tom

I'd been wanting a vertical mill, which I've actually used more than a lathe, but I realized most of my needs right now are best dealt with using a lathe. Anyway, in collecting accessories, I can always add the vertical milling column and use the existing head stock ![]() Yes, lots of accessories to spend what little money I have left. Since I bought the basic mill I needed to add a chuck. I ended up getting the 4-jaw chuck because I figured most of my milling stock with either be round or square and the 4-jaw seemed to make the most sense. Now, I just have to collect everything else. 42rocker, I think I know the book that you're talking about. A friend of mine has one and I leafed through it one day. A great book that I will be adding to my library shortly. Now that I spent the money on the lathe, I guess I'd better get some good ship modeling work done! Clare

I use it for some modeling stuff, but mainly for my wooden pen making. The kids are liking it too. Next lathe i buy is a full size one. I always loved wood turning. So I thought of the sherline years ago, but just did not want to spend too much because of my plans for a full size one. have fun with your new toy, and remember no long sleeves or tie your pony tail back so you won't end up giving your new toy a really big hug.................!!!! ![]() [ Edited Fri May 24 2013, 04:27pm ]

That way you can set it at any angle you like.

I'm surprised you don't know that by now... ![]() But, seriously, that's a great idea Arthur. I will implement that with next iteration of the ladder making jig – Ladder Jig 2.0. Thanks for the idea! Or rather, I'm making progress again now that I'm able to devote more time to it. I experimented with the new Sherline lathe and I have a LOT to learn. Plus, I think I need more attachments and tools ![]() I also made some basswood templates for the gun ports for the 30-pdr Parrot rifle pivot guns. These will help me work out the sizes for the segments that will make up the panels. Finally, I started putting some work in on the wheelhouse structures. I basically made the bases for the structures and will build upon those. Since I can't fit them permanently in place without adding the paddle wheels first, I drilled and pinned them, so I can test fit and remove as needed. This section has gone through a lot of little revisions in the planning stage, but I think I'm on track now, more or less. Clare ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Also, I'm finally back to testing out brass etching techniques and have been experimenting with that. Plus, I'm involved with playing some traditional Japanese music and just played at a Japanese cultural fair in Santa Cruz yesterday (which is a 2-hour drive from here) and have a 6-hour rehearsal today (ugh...) for a show we're doing in Alameda in a few weeks. So, when I'm not preparing for the music stuff or just too plain tired, I've been working with creating artwork for the metal parts using Adobe Illustrator and re-learning the techniques. Doesn't leave much time to actually get anything on the model. A couple nights ago, I tried some new materials and chemicals for the brass etching and it didn't work all that well, so I'm going to try again with a few modifications.
