Built following the original plans of Francisco Gautier she had 34 guns and a length of 161 feet and 548 tons. During 1778 she was send to the action off coast Algeria, fighting the Algerian pirates in the area under the command of Captain D. José de Miranda. The following year, under the command of D. Manuel Núñez Gaona, she joins the expeditionary force of Antonio de Ulloa to the Azores Islands. After several actions in the area, was taken as a prize after a fierce fight by the HMS Pearl. It was driven to Portsmouth where it was refitted during 1780 and joins the Royal Navy under her original name. In December of this year, was commissioned under the command of Captain John Linzee to Jamaica. On April 1st, 1782, while pursuing an expeditionary force of American ships around the British Virgin Islands, struck four times on a submerged rock and immediately bilged. The hold filled with water and the casks began floating about. Linzee put five pumps to work and forty hands began bailing with buckets. The ship was going down and Linzee decided to beach her on a nearest beach where he was able saved most of the stores above the main deck as well as the guns. Only one man was lost in the action. The Model The built will be at 1/48 scale in European pear wood. I will follow the same system of Edward Tosti or Allan Yedlinsky used for their wonderful build of the Naiad or Euryalus. The plans They are being developed by my friend Fermín Urtizberea, based on the following sources: - The original plan of the NMM of Greenwich, made upon her arrival at Portsmouth in 1780. - The original scantling rules of 1769 by Francisco Gautier, builder and designer of the Santa Monica. It is a small book, typical of Spanish ship builders where all the necessary wood pieces were detailed and draw. - The excepcional comparative tables of the book: “José Romero Fernández de Landa, un ingeniero de marina en el siglo XVIII” of José María de Juan-García Aguado, Universidad de La Coruña, 1998.
