The kit I also did freehand but with a pin vice. Alternatively you could make drilling templates from card stock so that everything lines up nicely if you prefer everything being symmetrical. But you'd still have to drill by hand. Another method I've seen used: 1. Cut your planks to length 2. Using drilling templates pre drill your planks. 3. Fill the trenail holes with wood filler 4. Glue on your planks In this method you are merely giving the appearance of trenails. When applying finish the wood filler will have a darker appearance thus giving you the visual appearance you desire. If I built the kit again, I would use this latter method. You just need to make sure you have good sharp drill bits to avoid tear out around the holes otherwise you'll get an undesirable result. Anyone else have any suggestions?

The 'jig' is simply a small sheet of paper with strips of wood glued to it, one long length to lay the plank along and four short ‘stops’ for the hole locations. The left and right hand stop are for the end holes and the other two do the intermediate holes. ![]() It was just a matter of moving the planks along and turning them round to drill the various holes. This picture shows some of the drilled planks and also the first ones glued in position: ![]() Vanguard is 1:72 scale so the holes shouldn't be that visible and I didn't put anything in them. The planks were laid to a 4 shift pattern. Note: I later sellotaped the card down! ![]()
