Thanks for your latest photos. One of the things which always amazes me is many modelers construct the hull with no supports for the keel, stem and stern post. Some use a commercial "keel holder" which can be tilted to any angle. I think it's much better to make a build board so that the keel is held so that the waterline (the real one on the plans) is horizontal. The bulkheads have slots which enable the bulkhead to be lowered onto the FALSE keel. Then if everything has been cut as accurately as possible AND if the slot in the false keel is accurately cut,the WATERLINES of all bulkheads should be in line. This does not always happen. Adjustments need to be taken. You told me you had drafted some of the bulkheads and used the station lines from the plans. It would be best if you had marked with a fine black pen, the waterline on the outboard face of each bulkhead. Have you seen a toolmaker's surface gauge? It is a heavy metal base with an adjustable round metal rod and on the rod is an adjustable pointer .You can set the pointer precisely at any level depending on the length of the rod. These surface gauges used to be about $30.00. Who knows now? If this is used as you locate each bulkhead on the build board you should have your waterlines all horizontal and in line. Hope this helps. https://www.micromark.com/Toolmakers-Surface-Gauge-Ship-Waterline-Marker Keith. [ Edited Sun Oct 06 2019, 12:19am ]

The bottom of the keel is parallel to the waterline for the majority of it's length, so that has not caused me any trouble. I also don't have much of a false keel going since I'm not building from a kit. I did, in fact, scribe the waterline on all the frames - it may be difficult to see in the photo but it is knife scribed on each one. Some also have it traced in pen. I took a look at the link you sent, it would have helped me locate the waterlines if I did not have them marked - but I think I'm going to look into some form of gantry-style jig to hold the frames in place and aligned as I glue them down. Ed Tosti on MSW does a gantry which is a work of art in itself but it still requires absolute accuracy in holding the hull vertical as well as in the correct position longitudinally. You can overthink the problem sometimes. Keith.

I am so used to doing so many things freehand, but as I progress in my skill, I look more and more to aides to accuracy

I admired the thought which went into its construction. There are things to consider too about fairing the bulkheads after their installation. I turned my Effie upside down and held it via the bulkheads for fairing (I had never done a POB model before). I also did what Mike suggested. I.E. added two #6-32 n.c. threaded rods in the keel so that when the ship was finally finished it could be bolted into a display case. Here are a couple of photos of Effie. As you can see in the first photo, Effie had a noticeable DRAG to the keel. ![]() ![]() [ Edited Sun Oct 06 2019, 04:17pm ]

Perhaps if I really get bored I might kick myself to do something .These schooners were really beautiful ships. Did you ever see the movie " Captains Courageous" with Spencer Tracey? Shows what it was like for fishermen on the Grand Banks.. Back to Nikolays' Tree of Life. Keith.
