I was so impressed with the performance apart from the helm being sluggish that I decided to build the smack. As the smack is basically the same hull sections in a smaller size as the Brixham I decided that I would build the smack hull length to the same as the Brixham. In doing so I decided to build the gunwales full height as on the Brixham so that I could build a fiberglass mould to replicate both boats. The smack would then have the gunwales trimmed when built. The smack has a more verticle rudder post and as this is the one problem with the Brixham, (not responding to the helm well enough) it should sail very well. All my models are strictly for sailing and have to handle well. I have so far built the hull for a plug and moulded off a fiberglass mould. The making of the mould turned pear shape on me as I have been rushing the build and not allowing time for the sealer coat on the plug to dry enough. There will be a small amount of remedial action to the mould required before I can turn out the first hull. I want to be able to sail the smack against the more modern yachts raced on our club days without following the fleet. ![]() ![]() ![]()

The dark patch in the upper half forward on the mould is a bubble that formed as a reaction to the sealer not being left long enough to dry. A few more days drying next time. To my surprise the plug has not suffered any damage as predicted. The planking is only 2.5mm thick and usually it destroyed making moulds. The mould has been replaced over the plug and will be allowed to age/harden over the next few days while I get back to some pressing work other than modelling.![]()
