Quincy for building the rigged model of the tern schooner JAMES MILLER. The lines were drawn from the offsets furnished by Nehemiah Hayden, the designer, to J.W. Griffiths for publication in the Nautical Monthly Magazine, November, 1854. The sail plan was developed from information contained in a journal kept by Nehemiah Hayden, contemporary paintings of other three-masters of the period, discussions with Capt. Carl Anderson and Capt. Francis Bowker and the usual practice of the period. Plans drawn by Mystic Seaport staff in 1976. Type Schooner Designer Hayden, Nehemiah Plans drawn by Quincy, William S. LOA 130' Beam 30' Draft 13' Plans include 3 sheets: lines and deck, spars and belaying detail, sail plan, rigging Source Daniel S. Gregory Ships Plans Library, Mystic Seaport Vessels & Small Craft Collection The plans are also found in a 38-page booklet published by Mystic Seaport Museum entitled "The Three-Masted Schooner James Miller: A History and Model Maker's Source Book, by William S. Quincy. As usual, I will be building the model out of basswood that has been either painted or stained. In a few instances, such as for pinrails and belaying pins, a harder wood will be used. So far, the keel, stem, sternpost, about 2/3 of the frames, and the keelson have been installed. Bamboo trenails have been used on the floors and futtocks of each frame, as well as the keelson. The frames are 1' sided (1/4") with 27" (5/16") spaces between each frame. ![]() ![]() ![]()

There were supposed to be more futtocks for each frame, bug since the frames won't be visible on the finished ship, I decided to simplify them a bit. Gene

It looks like you are staining the waterways and painting the bulwarks white as you go along. I am going to try using a little more paint on my models but I am not a very good painter I seem to get more paint on my hands than the ship. Hopefully a little practice will cure that problem.
