What do you think about the the following pictures? I'm still wondering how it was possible that the ship's crew could manage the central gun in this cross section. There is practically no room for the gun recoil due to the mortar pit and also the gun's mouth could not be fully accessible from the deck. According to the Goodwin's Anatomy of the Ship Bomb Vessel Granado, that gun is in the correct place. Also the pictures of the NMM model show only one gun in the ship and curiously enough is in that position slightly in diagonal to the gun port. I'm afraid that due to the history of this vessel, this is due to her brief history as a Sloop. Goodwin said that the general design lines of this ship are typical of a Sloop and just one year later after launching as a bomb vessel she was fitted as a Sloop. Probably this gun port was never used during her duty as a Bomb vessel... Spanien ![]() ![]()

Now I’m realizing, thanks to a good friend, that the plans make reference to 12-pounder guns rather to 4-pounder guns who were the original ones following Goodwin’s book: “Initially eight 4-pounders were carried”. Apart from that, still there is not enough space for the normal gun operation at this point. I’m almost sure the central gun port of the cross section was never in use during her service as a bomb vessel and was in use most probably during her time as a sloop. Goodwin said: “Initially eight 4-pounders were carried, but this number was increased to ten after the ship’s conversion to a sloop, with the additional guns placed either under the forecastle as bow chasers or at the fifth gun ports.” Cheers, Spanien

The mortar is now in position with all the metal fitting in place. A couple of chains have been added for securing the main hinges.
