I now have some time available to me now that I have our special needs son situated in Norfolk Va. and I can pursue a long love of American Fishing Schooners and making some models of them. This will be a long road but I hope an interesting and fruitful journey. 1. I just ordered the prints of Philip Eisnor. ![]() 2. I plan to follow Gene Bodnar's practicum. 3. I plan to hand loft the frames (for now) and later maybe use Autocad or the like. 4. I am an Engineer by training (Electrical, Semiconductor).... Drafting skills rusty... but I have all the right tools except the drafting table. Including the proportional dividers. I will be gathering some needed tools as I go: 1. a jigsaw. I have a small Delta bandsaw. 2. a GOOD set of chisels 3. I dont know about a modelers table saw.. they are really pricey.. (with a special needs son mr. Lincoln get's pinched quite a lot). I will also be asking about where to purchase wood from.. All this will be done piecemeal over quite a bit of time. I plan on posting quite a bit though. I wish I had been around when the Practicum was in full swing on the Navalboard site.. The site is still actually available via the wayback machine... but I did not have an account then so I cannot look at the postings.. ah well.. I will just start anew! ![]() I have plenty of reference material.. ![]() I do have a question though.. since Philip Eisnor's prints are proprietary and I want to discuss any plotting of frames ect... how does that work? I have never seen any plans or portions of plans presented in postings... Looking forward to this ! Guy PS.. I was a submarine sailor on a Fast Attack Submarine tail end of Vietnam.. ![]()

That is exactly what Gene did in his practicum (which was originally published on the NBM website and later converted to the PDF practicum here on the site).

The Bluenose II was my first build (I wish it was Genes Practicum), and I am workin from Gene's Eagle practicum now. I anticipate your reallly enjoying the frame lofting experience and agree with your "old school" approach to this. There are many of us here that can help you as you get going, that includes lofting by pencil or CAD. Best, G

Just post pictures of your progress on a building log, and ask questions as you build. Incidentally, that Delta band saw you already own is an ideal tool for cutting out frames. I've never owned a set of chisels; however, I do own one small one that I rarely have used. A disk sander is a necessity, perhaps a 5" wheel. Most other tools you will used should be acquired as you need them -- you will find that very few are really necessary. Beware of many tools that are hyped as model shipbuilder's tool, for many of them are completely useless. A set of proportional dividers are essential for lofting your own frames by hand. Remember that the best assets for ship modeling are patience and perseverance. You will make mistakes, most of which can be corrected, and you will learn much during the process. When you actually complete your first POF model, you will experience the greatest feeling of accomplishment that no other hobby can offer. Good luck. Gene Bodnar

Get a scroll saw you can't beat them for use in scratch building. 2 I took a tile saw which is cheap and changed the blade to a wood cutting blade plus made a little plate to fill the gap now it is a handy little table saw. 3. A plug in (not battery) Dremil or a cheap one from Princess Auto. The above tools get the most use in my hobby shed.

(I had wished for a rolled set) but I can start now in earnest. I would love to make some digital scans of these documents for my personal use and for digitization in the CAD software but am not sure now that this is permitted... I perhaps should have ordered 2 sets of drawings but this is pretty pricy...I will baby this set... more later. Guy
