This is my first build using this type of jig and building method and I have to say I am quite impressed so far. Looking forward to the next stage.

When faring the hull this will clean up nicely and will look the same as the bow/keel/stern assembly. When I first saw a laser cut part I thought it was burnt wood, but its not. Dave can probably explain the process a lot better than I.

So far everything is going relatively smoothly I think. The stern section was a little tricky and I won't be to sure on how good a job I've done until the hull is faired.

When a piece is just cut the dark stuff on the wood is sticky. When laser cutting was first introduced in ship modeling a number of "experts" made comments that the laser burned the wood and by the time you clean the parts they would be to small or you can never clean the burned wood completely etc. This gave laser cutting a bad rap and it took some time for it to be accepted as a way to produce parts. This is not to say a laser will not burn wood because it will. Depending on the power setting of the laser and the speed it is moving and if it hits the table the wood sheet is sitting on. When a laser goes through a sheet of wood and hits something below, it will flash and the heat from that flash will burn the underside of the wood sheet. Another myth about lasers is the idea they cut on an angle like an upside down V, again this is a myth a laser beam cuts an hour glass shape. when a laser hits the surface of the wood it starts cutting then spreads out about .004 then as it exits the bottom it will focus again. Different types of wood will have different results with the laser char. there are other ways to produce parts and one is to use an end mill and CNC and cut out parts. This works except for one little problem SPEED. This is like pitting a 1960 VW bug against a dragster a laser will cut an entire sheet of frame parts befor a CNC mill can finish one part. In production time is money.

We're awaiting information from the Archaeologists on the drawings. They have noticed some small issues that they think we might want to address. So, until we hear from them and are able to review their comments we're going to stop building until further notice. We don't believe this will be long though as we hope to have a revised set of drawings to present to them when I meet with them later this month or early next. So stay tuned for further updates.

I'm off tomorrow to meet with the archaeological team about the project. When I return I should have all the information/drawings etc. that we need in order to proceed with this modeling project.
