I have always wanted to get into building model ships but never really had the time as I was active duty in the US Coast Guard. Now that I just got out and am not doing anything other than going to school I decided to get the PHANTOM as my first project. Here are some pictures of my progress thus far...the step in the gunwale of the starboard side and the first cut of my keel. Questions I have... GOUGING. This has been really hard for me. I still need to gouge the step in the middle of the ship and the fantail. I have been using the tool kit that came with the model set. Are these gouging attachments just crap or is there a special technique I should be using? I am wary about doing it because with this tool it would take a lot of force and I dont want to slip and mess something up. I have dremel and an Xacto tool kit coming in the mail tomorrow. Hopefully these will make it easier. ![]() ![]()

Also, bonus item, I didn't have any tracing paper for the rudder outline and I didn't want to cut up the plans. No tracing paper, no problem, an old film from a business envelope worked wonders. I was able to trace the outline with a fine tip marker and flip it onto the wood before it dried and retraced the other side to push the ink onto the wood. A cool lifehack if you ask me.![]() ![]() ![]()
