MSB Community, I’ve now come to that point of any build in which everything has to slow down due to the small finishing touches that either makes or breaks a model. Progress is still forthcoming but at a slower pace than you may want. I’ve been trying to contemplate as to what anchor I want for my ship and found out that the stone and wood anchors are still used to this day in the Orient that I decided to make one. The first photo will show you a drawing of the stone and wood anchor and the second photo will show you what I’ve constructed. I need everyone’s input as to see if this anchor is up to par so please do not hold back any punches. I really like the simulated bamboo battens that Mike used on his Korean Turtle Ship and decided to incorporate it into my build as the third photo will show. The fourth photo will show you what the sails are starting to look like. Photos 5 through 10 will show you how my build is looking from various angles and the last photo will show my ship’s stand. I’ve not used it yet because I’ve just finished staining it with cherry stain to incorporate more red into my overall presentation. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

The sails are great as well, the red will draw the eye. This all being said, respectfully, I am not a fan of the stand... Maybe it's just me, but I think a scratch built stand would serve this model better. I had a similar stand as yours for my Rattler and stained it cherry as well. The wood was cross grained and just all wrong. It just wasnt the same in quality as the ship itself. I decided to scrap it and replaced it with brass pedestals instead. Looking forward to more photos. Gary

When I saw your drawing, I looked at how it's made and how it would work. Obviously the short branch is intended to dig into the seabed and the lashing is there to stop it breaking off. However that means it has to land the right way up. If you look at traditional anchors, they'll work either way up. The stone will definitely help in that respect but I think it's there to get the anchor to sink - a fairly fundamental requirement!
You're doing a really nice job on the sails; I like the colour. How have you finished off the edges to stop them fraying, especially along the curved sections?
I'm afraid I'm with Gary on the stand, the model deserves better!

I was a little worried that I had missed the mark and had to redo it. As to the base, I thought it looked fine until you pointed out the obvious as to ensuring that I had a worthy base to display my model. I’ve been looking around and thinking as to how I will wind up displaying it and I have a few ideas. In the mean time, I can still use the base as a cradle support stand for other models. Arthur, What I am using for the edges is something I “confiscated” from my wife’s sewing kit. It’s called Fray Check from a company by the name of Dritz and comes in a ¾ fl oz bottle. It says that it “Stops Fraying on Fabric!” I’ve used it numerous times and it seems to hold true to its claim. I will say that it darkens the fabric just a bit until it dries out and then it’s unnoticeable. You can also remove unwanted spots with rubbing alcohol. The picture below will show you what I am talking about. On a side note, I have started to draft frames for the Eagle while continuing to work on my Vietnamese junk. I will start a log soon on the POB section of the forum. ![]()
