The coil is held in shape by soaking it in diluted PVA glue and when it's dried, the coil is simply transferred to the model.
If I've got room to work, I prefer to coil the actual line. I posted the method on MSW a while ago in response to some questions asking how it was done. I've now posted the method in the 'Jigs & Things' forum so you can now see it here if you want to give it a try. (Definitely a more dificult method, but I think it looks better. You can see it here.

One method, cut two circles same size (approx. 3" dia) take a map pin (the ones with colored platic tops) poke a hole dead center of the circle, leave the pin in the hole).. Wet a length (here you need to trial and error to get the size) of line with 50/50 water white or yellow glue, put the glue on your index finger and thumb then run the line through to get it wet, then take one end slide it between the two circles right up to the pin shaft, turn the circles wrapping the line in a flat circle, until the dia you want the coil. Slide the pin out, cut excess line off, place the coil where you want then drop a drop of the 50/50 glue mix on the coil and press gently in place. Make the next one....etc. I thought I had pictures but I know if you go to http://www.shipmodeling.ca/aagv001.html and join, you can see how this is done in a video, plus every other tip and trick you can imagine. I think $40 to join forever. Best 40 you will spend in shipbuilding!!! Tom
