Model Ship Building Tools

As enjoyable as building model ships can be, it can be even more enjoyable if we have the tools necessary to do the job.

Most of the tools listed can be purchased at any well stocked model shop. Other supplies can be found at our local office supplies store.

There is one thing I would like to add before I get I get into the tools themselves. Its a lesson I learned the hard way. And there is no better way I can think of than to quote Milton Roth, from his book "Ship Modeling, from Stem to Stern" (ISBN 0-8306-2844-4):

"Buying tools for the sake of possession is simply collecting.
Keeping tools in your tool chest is a waste.
Keeping the tool handy is storage.
Keeping the tool in your hand and getting the work done is accomplishment."

The bottom line I'm getting at is, if you don't need it right now, don't buy it just because it's there. Actually, you'll probably be surprised at the number of tools you thought you needed but don't, not to mention those you may already have.

When you spend money on tools, spend it on quality rather than quantity! Quality tools will not only last you a lifetime, but they will make your tasks much easier than trying to use inferior tools. Remember, you can always add tools when you find you need them.

Tool List

Please note that this list is only meant as a guide. You will know what you need when you need it.

1. Rulers, compasses etc
2. Slide-rule or Calculator
3. Fretsaw with table and clamp. Fretsaw blades for wood and metal
4. Hand-drill and variety of bits ranging in size from 1/32" to 1/4" for both wood and metal. There are a variety of good rotary tools available today that are well suited to modeling (look for those with variable speed control).
5. Wood rasps, needle files, a variety of sandpaper to a very fine grade.
6. Small hammer (I'd recommend something around 6 oz)
7. Carving Chisels.
8. Hobby knives with a supply of extra blades.
9. Whetstone for sharpening your blades.
10. A set of small needle nose pliers, looping pliers.
11. A variety of Tweezers of varying lengths and design.
12. Scissors, pins, needles..
13. Magnifying glass. Preferably one that is either of the suspended type or one that can be placed in some type of frame so you can work with both hands.
14. Vices, large and small.
15. Clamps of various types. Don't just run out and buy any set of clamps. First have a look at the reason you need them and you'll be sure to buy the appropriate ones suitable for your needs.

The subject of power tools is really beyond the scope of this work and will be covered in another artcile where they may be given the attention they deserve.
